French depressive black metal band with a name derived from the dark kingdom of the north in Tolkien's literary works. On this second album the bass guitar is once again very prominent and these exotic bass lines are as vital as the riffs that accompagny them. The songs are lengthy, clocking anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. Throughout these small epics there's a host of contrasting atmospheres, moods and segments that give Angmar a far richer musical palette than the average black metal act. The tasteful acoustics, well arranged choirs and light washes of ambient keyboards form a great contrast to this otherwise raw and primitive black metal assault. "Zurück In Die Unterwelt" holds the same dark and majestic atmosphere as Enslaved's "Hordanes Land". For the majority this record plays a doom metal record with a black metal foundation and similar vocals. While the tempo is lower than most modern day black metal record the songs flow incredibly well. The absence of any really fast material isn't missed and the record's deliberate pace also makes it sound easily more menacing and darker than the average blasting black metal band. For fans of (early) Enslaved, Naglfar and Wolves In the Throne Room.
