Chicago, Illinois death metallers Cardiac Arrest have been around in one form or the other since 1997 and now deliver their third record on John McEntee (Incantation, Funerus) label Ibex Moon Records. The two previous records "Morgue Mutilations" (released in 2006 on Redrum Records, the label of Mortician frontman Will Rahmer) and "Cadaverous Presence" (in 2008 on Deaden/Lividity vocalist Von Young's Epitomite Productions) saw this band playing traditional death metal, primitive and bereft of any modern influences. "Haven For the Insane" culminates this evolution with a sound that is equal parts "Hammer Of Gods" era Angelcorpse and "Severed Survival" era Autopsy with some minor pre-"Mortal Repulsion" era Goreaphobia and (early) Death leanings. The drumming of Jim Deabenderfer is stylistically similar to Craigh Smilowski (Goreaphobia, Immolation). Highlights: 'Against Their Will', 'Haunted Remnants', 'Embrace the Aftermath', the latter having a great Autopsy vibe. The album was recorded at Kai Kauffman's Polymorph Media Studio and the production is baroque but fitting. The production is similar the earlier records of Unleashed and Goreaphobia. The artwork, design and lay-out isn't all that spectacular and a painting or drawing by Chris "Thorncross" Moyen (In Aeturnum, Nominon, Sathanas) Erik Danielsson (Watain) or Axel Hermann (Asphyx, Grave, Unleashed) would have fitted much better. Nevertheless is "Haven For the Insane" another solid entry in Ibex Moon Records' catalogue of trendkilling traditional death metal.
