Three years after the commendable "Battle Lords" (which featured former Vital Remains members Paul and Justin Flynn) Rhode Island death metallers Godless Rising return more powerful and potent than ever. Featuring highly skilled guitarist Toby Knapp and session drums by Andy Jones "Trumpet Of Triumph" is indeed a triumphant return of former Vital Remains frontman Jeff Gruslin. Like Vital Remains Knapp's neo-classical riffing, harmonies and leads/solos give "Trumpet Of Triumph" an epic feel with its grand arrangements and well-conceived dynamics. Both in feel and execution this is reminiscent of Vital Remains' "Into Cold Darkness". Compared to past efforts Gruslin is far more varied behind the mic, rasping, growling and even narrative in parts. 'Christ Cadaver' is probably the compositional highpoint of the record. When compared to Vital Remains of today Godless Rising aren't as nearly as blast-oriented nor are they as excessive in its extensive leads/solos. One can only imagine what potency Godless Rising would possess if they managed to enroll Rhode Island scene veteran and multi-instrumentalist Dave Suzuki (ex-Vital Remains). The excellent production from Triad Recording Complex is more than a step up from their past records. Mastered at Nettleingham Audio (Leviathan, Sargeist, Drawn and Quartered, Avsky) the album sounds modern and pristine. Exquisite cover art by legendary underground artist Chris Moyen (Beherit, Archgoat, Black Witchery). Overall is "Trumpet Of Triumph" a vital testament that the classic death metal will never die. Welcome back, gentlemen.
