After a number of demos and one full length in 2004, Lux Ferre is close to making their ultimate musical statement. This is black metal from Lisbon, Portugal that reminds in equal parts of "Wrath Of the Tyrant" era Emperor (minus the keyboards), "The Somberlain" era Dissection (minus the overt Iron Maiden influences) and "Opus Nocturne" era Marduk. 'The Bell Of Fate' displays the band's (early) Emperor leanings, while 'Atrae Materiae Monumentum' and 'Pira' unveil the band's Dissection foundation with its use of majestic melody and sorrowful harmonies and arrangements. 'Correntes' and 'Breu' are the most evil and fastest tracks of the album, deriving much influence from Swedish genre archfiends Marduk. Vocally, this album is down the line of Unlord ("Schwarzwald"). In its few slower moments Lux Ferre are able to create an authentic atmosphere of desolation and despair. The session drum recordings for this album was laid down by Pedro Madeira at Estudio 213, Oporto. While not entirely on par with the veterans of this genre Lux Ferre is coming ever closer to delivering their ultimate musical manifesto. "Atrae Materiae Monumentum" is a relentless onslaught of Nordic darkness that few will be able to match and Lux Ferre are but a few steps away of joining with the masters. This is a black metal act to keep an eye upon. Very promising, indeed.
