Black metal from Hobart, Tasmania (Australia) featuring Psycroptic drummer David Haley. The influences are far and wide, going from Celtic Frost (the riffing, vocals), (early) Satyricon to Goatwhore (groove and general execution) – "Front the Final Foes" takes cues from several eras of the genre's history. After their promising 2005 Neurotic Records debut "Spun Forth As Dark Nets" this third album sees Ruins finding their voice and delivering their most accomplished and lethal record to date. Alex Pope's vocals are a lot more natural sounding and well-enunciated compared to most other black metal singers. Haley's drumming is uniformly fantastic and it's good to see him trying out a different style and approach compared to his work in Psycroptic. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Red Planet and Crawlspace Studios. The bass-heavy production is amazing with warm and full-sounding drums, including an organic kickdrum sound and sharp but clear sounding guitars. The abstract artwork, design and lay-out is a lot more traditional compared to Ruins' earliest releases, but this fits the record well.
