In 2007 Flemish black metallers Slecht debuted with the "Triumph Of Death" demo, inspired by the painting of the same name by renowned Flemish painter Pieter Breughel, the elder, which in part was used for cover artwork. This new promo offers four new cuts and a re-recorded version of 'Einde der Tijd' ('End of Time'). Vocalist JC has a good sounding morbid rasp and his venomous delivery is reminiscent of the work of Tomas Lindberg in the earliest days of At the Gates. The bass guitar features prominently and the riffing has become far more interesting all around. The drumming is strictly supportive and doesn't add a whole lot, there is no cymbal, hi-hat and china interaction to speak of. The riffing on the guitar is quite minimal, naked and slightly more death metal oriented than last time around. 'Exhuming' starts off with a compact bass solo and is an otherwise slow building cut and the sole highlight of this promo. While the band has gained in tightness, skill and togetherness, they still are far away from dethroning any of Belgium's established black metal hordes. The bass-heavy production is considerably better than the garage sound of "Triumph Of Death" with a distinct crunchy guitar tone and natural sounding snare and kickdrums. The modern industrial building artwork is also strangely unfitting. "In Decay..." is a definite step up for Slecht, it remains to be seen whether they keep evolving in this direction. Fans of early Satyricon (minus the folk instrumentation and melodies) and Immortal's slower early days might find this of interest.
