This progressive metal band from Windsor, Ontario (Canada) is certainly something different. Dubbing themselves "monster rock" Sledge Hammer are featuring no guitars instead they make extensive use of the piano and electric marimba where the guitars normally would have been. All tracks are well thought out, structured meticulously and are both straightforward and avant-garde in execution. The instrumentation is daring and truly unique in the original sense of the word. There's a flair of drama and theatrics not often heard anymore. On the level of intensity Sledge Hammer easily match Symphony X and like that act they have a knack for writing bouncing rhythm sections, extensive piano and marimba leads/solos. "Revenge Equals Profit Equals Power" plays out as a rock opera of sorts, although it obviously isn't on the same level of composition as Pink Floyd's "The Wall" or The Who's "Tommy". The use of piano and no guitars also links this band to a Britpop act such as Keane, who did a similar thing on their debut "Hopes and Fears". The dual vocals are of the punk and hardcore variety (think The Offspring and Pennywise) without becoming either too chaotic or aggressive. 'La Pluie Jaune' ('The Yellow Rain') is the wildest track of the record and also the only one sung in French. 'Johnny Appleseed' is a full-instrumental and captures the nursery rhyme in a wild instrumental cut. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at SLR Studios by Martin Bak. The artwork, design and lay-out are good, although they stand out less than this impressive musical package. Despite their moronic moniker Sledge Hammer are one of the most daringly original bands on the scene today.
