"Defiance" is, more than anything, a work of perseverance on the note of founder Hiram Lohr, who took on the perilous task of commercial fishing in order to finance this record. Thousand Year War play melodic Viking death metal that is heavily indebted to the likes of Amon Amarth ('Defiance', 'The Sea'), where on 'Open Casket' and 'Spartacus' bands like Skeletonwitch and Immortal seem to primary influence. All elements are accounted for: the folkish melodies, the galloping Iron Maiden riffs and sparse epic leads/solos that are interspersed with unrelenting blastbeats and dense rhythm sections. The rasping and heroic vocals form a nice change from the usual monotoneous grunting and growling. The cover of I track 'Storm I Ride' is just a bit too soon, considering the only released one album in 2006. Instead of mythology Thousand Year War deals lyrically with eco-political disillusionment and ire, which certainly sets them apart from their peers in this genre. "Defiance" is a good record in the genre, but not one that will set Thousand Year War apart from the many competitors in the genre, for that it is a tad too safe. Nevertheless, Thousand Year War on the right track and they should be able to write something truly exceptional in a matter of years from now.
