Originally based in the Gold Coast, Australia but relocated to Los Angeles, California in 2005. Drummer John Sankey was in an early incarnation of Divine Heresy. First record to feature new vocalist Kyle Zemanek. Originally released in 2004 by Modern Music, now re-released by Unique Leader Records with a different track order and featuring vocals by new singer Zemanek. From opening track 'Fractured', the roll-out single of this record, it becomes clear that "Calculated" is a calculated assault on the senses of the listener. Devolved play an abrasive form of industrial technical death metal which combines the abstract technicality of Meshuggah ("Chaosphere") with Fear Factory's pioneering cyber-industrial metal ("Soul Of A New Machine" and "Demanufacture") with Zemanek's hardcore vocals. Sankey's drumming is amazing in his speed, fills and rolls. His hammering kickdrum work is utterly unreal. The samples, loops and industrial soundbits give "Calculated" a very clinical, otherworldly feel. The production is crunchy with a thick but clean guitar tone and a finely triggered but natural drum sound, the kickdrums for once don't sound like a typewriter. Mixed by Neil Kernon (Cannibal Corpse, Diabolic, Nevermore, Nile). The ultramodern artwork, design and lay-out by Martin Romero and John Sankey is simply amazing. The cover of Metallica classic 'Battery' is an odd choice, considering Devolved play an entirely different style. It's good to see Unique Leader Records branching out a little in the extreme metal genre, hopefully Devolved will be able to follow this up with an equally as good third album.
