German melo-death metallers Fragments Of Unbecoming have over their last two albums (both released on Metal Blade Records) carved out a respectable niche for themselves. Combining the traits of (early) At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, a bit of Diabolical and "Storm Of the Light's Bane" era Dissection they have specialized in epic sounding dark labyrinthine melodic death metal. Compared to a lot of other bands in this genre Fragments Of Unbecoming don't sound fluffy and bone-crushing brutality is expertly mixed with melody. While the material is dense and layered Fragments Of Unbecoming never lose the songs out of perspective. There's a lot going on and the level of intricacies only become apparent after multiple listening sessions. Mixed and mastered by Christoph Brandes at Iguana Studios (Common Grave, Deadborn). The artwork, design and lay-out was created by guitarist Sascha Ehrich. Most of the record was already finished in 2008, but finding the right label and distributor led to delay this album experienced. The European release edition comes with an extra noble cardboard-box. "The Everhaunting Past" is certainly a good addition to the European melodic death metal scene. Hopefully more bands will follow the path of Fragments Of Unbecoming and install a more traditional sound palette for Swedish styled melodic death metal.
