Sopot, Poland-based death metal band featuring ex-Behemoth members Adam "Baal Ravenlock" Muraszko and Leszek "Les Kaos" Dziegielewski, plus current Vader skinsman Pawel "Paul" Jaroszewicz; thus there's no shortage of experience within this unit, although the band initially started out as a side-project of Damnation. "Darkness" is the band's fifth record and first featuring Jaroszewicz behind the kit. From first half of the record is notably more full-on death metal with some light Middle Eastern scales in the first few cuts. The second half of "Darkness" plays more fast and loose and is far more black/thrashier. The drumming of Jaroszewicz is notably underwhelming and is strictly functional and supportive, without ever doing anything truly remarkable. The production of Hertz Studio is crunchy as ever with a prominent place for the bass guitar. The finely-tuned guitar tone is crisp but heavy and each instrument has its required space. Artwork, design and lay-out by Mentalporn (Lost Soul, Masachist, Trauma) are superb and eye-catching as per usual. The limited edition of this record has slightly different artwork and features 6 live tracks recorded in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2003. Hell-Born isn't going to dethrone any of the established Polish institutions soon, but their more thrashier and laidback approach make "Darkness" a nice change of pace.
