Germany keeps on delivering some impressive extreme metal bands every few years. Valborg, a progressive death metal act featuring Klabautamann guitarist/bassist Florian Toyka on drums, is one of these humbly unknown acts working the underground scene. The band is rounded by Jan Buckard (vocals, bass) and Christian Kolf (vocals, guitars), both of whom have contributed to Klabautamann’s latest record “Merkur” with artwork and lyrics, respectively. The vocals are similar to (early) At the Gates, circa “Gardens Of Grief” while others are heroic spoken. The music is incredibly somber with wandering melodies, sparse acoustics, light keyboard passages, slowly unfolding leads/solos and doom-ish dynamics similar to early Swedish death metal act as Unanimated. The odd track is ‘I Am Space’ which sounds like a metalized The Sisters Of Mercy without their synthesizers and drummachine or even Billy Idol’s ‘White Wedding’. Recorded on analogue tape at Stonehenge Studios in December 2008 with producer Oliver Weiskopf. It’s good to hear natural sounding drums making a return in the current tradition of over-triggering everything and making the kit sound sterile. Mastered by Tom Kvålsvoll at Strype Audio (Arcturus, Emperor, Keep Of Kalessin, Red Harvest) in Oslo, Norway. The impressive artwork was by created by Peter Boehme. The band’s next album “Barbarian” is expected somewhere in 2011.
