Self-proclaimed redneck black metallers Blood Cult from Kenney, Illinois debut on Moribund Records after a slew of demos and promos. These Deep South black metallers claim to infuse their assault with country and Southern rock influences and this becomes evident in a track like 'Devil's Sabbath', which sounds as a deep fried and booze-fueled mix between Black Sabbath, ZZ Top and (early) Darkthrone. The solo'ing is excellent and while the riffing is a bit pedestrian, it's one of the signature cuts on the album. The vocals are a mixed bag of nasal black metal shrieks and plain rock singing, neither of which are entirely convincing. In the more convincing vocal parts the singing reminds of Sathanas' Paul Tucker. 'Seeds' is a more straightforward black metal track with occasional slower segments and an extended solo section towards the end. 'Serpent' and 'Illinoisan Altar' are heavy on country accents. The country and Southern rock influences are prevalent over the black metal parts, something which their earlier releases didn't. On a label otherwise known for a nose for quality Norse black metal and sadistic death metal Blood Cult are somewhat of and odd signing. Nevertheless the combination of black metal with country, bluegrass and Southern rock isn't something that is heard everyday. For that reason alone Moribund Records should be applauded for signing this band and exposing them to the world at large.
