After two demos, two EPs and two albums Austin, Texas-based black/doom metallers Brown Jenkins have called it a day. As in the past Brown Jenkins do not adhere to conventional songstructure on this final album. The buzzy guitar tone is superb, somewhere between Godflesh and Burzum. The bass guitar is absolutely massive and thundering. The minimalist riffing, sparse melodies and funereal dirge tempos have remained intact while the vocals have become more prominent this time around. On this record the doom metal aspect of the band is further explored, as it was on their "Dagonite" EP. Not all tracks on this record feature vocalist and Brown Jenkins' strength lies in their great instrumental skill. The trollish vocals are a lot better than the hair-raising shrieks of some other black metal bands. The tempo lies fairly high for this band's usual standards and this makes this record partly more accessible. "Death Obsession" is the band's most dynamic and groovy album to date. "Death Obsession" is a perfect eulogy for one of America's most promising and all too shortlived black metal entities other than the acclaimed Wolves In the Throne Room. Hopeless, godlike they are.
