Progressive death metal a la post-"Spiritual Healing" Death, Spawn Of Possession, Decapitated and "Testimony Of the Ancients" era Pestilence featuring former Flesh Consumed drummer Chris Barnum. 'Clipping the Wings Of Hope' – a re-recorded cut off the preceding EP – is the signature track of this debut album. The bass guitar is prominent in the mix and forms an integral part of this band's impressive musical arsenal. While being accomplished musicians the showmanship never gets in the way of the actual songs. The guitar riffs are abundant, slick and incorporate jazzy breaks and segments. The carefully structured neo-classical leads/solos are a joy to hear. The drumming is tasteful. All tracks are recognizable and their individual traits make them memorable in their own right. Dismal Lapse is still miles away from the level of songmanship when compared to the likes of Death, (later) Pestilence or even Decapitated, but it's good to see songcraft making a return over directionless brutality, heaviness and speed. The artwork is hideous and ugly. In Europe bands as Carnal Rapture, Cerebrum, Unreal Overflows and Sickening Horror are on the forefront of revitalizing a more classic counterpart of the death metal sound; bands such as Banishment, The New Plague and this act are starting this movement in North America. Dismal Lapse aren't quite on the same level as the bands that inspired them, but don't act surprised if Dismal Lapse end up signing to either Willowtip or Unique Leader Records in a few years from now.
