The second cooperation between Kam Lee (Bone Gnawer, Massacre) and Swedish one-man death metal industry Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Ribspreader). Unlike Bone Gnawer this act focuses around the literary works of famed horror authors HP Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe. As the case with Bone Gnawer this band also plays a form of Swedish/American death metal. Lee is his usual self with his pioneering intense grunting and growling while Johansson provides The Grotesquery with a solid quantity of neckbreaking riffs. "Tales Of the Coffin Born" combines American brutality with traditional Swedish death metal melodies (Dismember, Grave, Unleashed) as well as keeping an atmosphere of gloom and doom. Kam Lee is still the master of grunting, his vocals don't nearly sound as deep as on Massacre's legendary "From Beyond" album. Instrumentally, this is another high quality product with a good production and fitting grisly artwork. The Grotesquery isn't quite the second coming for death metal veterans Kam Lee or multi-instrumentalist Rogga Johansson, it is however one of the best pure death metal records this year. With the scene being as oversaturated as it is, it's good seeing the veterans showing the new generation how this genre is supposed to sound.
