Italian one-man black metal project Hiems releases its second album after 2005's "Cold Void Journey". The albums opens with a moody minute and half long percussion intro with eerie keyboards and deformed growling vocals. Hiems play highly charged Swedish black metal akin to Dissection and Marduk. Playing mostly a midpace "Worship Or Die" recreates the gloomy atmosphere of the better Swedish death metal albums. The riffing finds the ideal middleground between death – and black metal. Hiems is by no means on the same level yet as "Storm Of the Light's Bane" era Dissection, but they are coming ever closer. The prominent bass lines, jaw-dropping harmonies and occasional traditional heavy metal riff make "Worship Or Die" more interesting than anything usually released in the underground black metal scene. The dynamics aren't always fully developed but Hiems is miles above many of its peers. Excellent bass-heavy production with a crunchy guitar tone and organic sounding drums. The artwork isn't anything special, but with a musical package this strong the artwork is a minor complaint.
