On their second DVD since 2006's "Frozen Alive" Brandon, Florida death metal legends Obituary prove why they are a mainstay in the genre since its formative days. Delivering a cross-section of their first two records and their more recent output this DVD has something for everybody. Shot in high definition with multiple cameras at Bad Berka, Germany "Live Xecution" sees Obituary in fine form storming through a lengthy set that excludes any material from "The End Complete", "World Demise" and "Back From the Dead" but nevertheless represents the band's backcatalogue well enough. The focus of the show is mainly on the then freshly released "Xecutioner's Return" album and its companion "Left to Die" EP. Ralph Santolla has nicely settled in and his complex neo-classical solo'ing form a good contrast from Obituary's otherwise blunt assault. Santolla perfectly replicates Allen West's tortured solos while adding a flair all his own to them. Obituary is a well oiled machine and the performances are incredibly tight. John Tardy (vocals) and Donald Tardy (drums) briefly share percussion duties in the massive intro of 'Slow Death'. As expected, a cover Celtic Frost's 'Dethroned Emperor' closes the set. The image and sound quality are superb and the energetic editing never gets too crazy. The extras includes the usual backstage material shot by the band's handicam. As with anything post-"Frozen In Time" Obituary the questionable artwork, design and lay-out aren't all that spectacular - but "Live Xecution - Party.San 2008" is a good addition to the band's impressive legacy and continues to prove why these Floridians are as relevant as they were when starting out two decades ago.
