The vrykolakas, variant vorvolakas, is a harmful undead creature in Greek folklore. It is generally equated with the vampire of the folklore of the neighbouring Slavic countries. Since 1992 Singapore-based extremists Vrykolakas have been bombarding the underground with their murky and dense death metal combining elements of Incantation and Internal Suffering. The style is chaotic and dark with demonic undertones that is reminiscent of Incantation's revered debut "Onward to Golgotha" and the blasting intensity of "Supreme Knowledge Domain" era Internal Suffering. The material for this compilation was culled from various splits this act did, including the 5 tracks the band donated to the "Supreme Brutal Legions" 5-way split, three tracks from the "Buried In Filthy Vomits" demo/EP, one track from the "Nuthfah" promo from 1999, 3 tracks from Vrykolykas 1992 demo and concluding a cover of Leviathan's 'Dark Descends'. Notable is that the band's 1992 is heavily influenced by Blasphemy, Hellhammer and (early) Morbid Angel. The production varies wildly from release to release, going from acceptable demo level quality to the underproduced garage variety, but is generally comparable to the aforementioned Internal Suffering disc. Released as a joint venture between Thailand's Calamity Productions and the band's own Vrykoblast Productions "Nocturnal Demons Of Death" is good historical document on Vrykolakas' demo and split releases. Hopefully they are able to follow this up with a second full length in a not too distant future.
