Formed in 1999 under the name Overture Polish symphonic black metallers Naumachia released two albums prior to "Black Sun Rising". Featuring members from Devilish Impressions, Christ Agony, Chainsaw and Hate the instrumental mastery and compositional skill is well above average. The vocals of frontman Tomasz "Soyak" Kilinski are similar to those of former Crionics singer War-an. The similarities with Crionics and Devilish Impressions are more than superficial, as Naumachia combine the blasting intensity and technical prowess of Crionics with the industrial/symphonic soundscapes and vocal acrobacy of Devilish Impressions. The riffing of Kilinski and Andrzej Selwon is abrasive, technically refined and melodic in the right places. The bass work of Mortifer (Hate) is audible and doesn't just mirror the guitars. The drumming by Icanraz (Devilish Impressions, Christ Agony) is impressive as he easily switches between furious blasting and more deliberately paced percussion. The industrial keyboards by VX give the whole an alien and otherworldly feel. The production by Hertz Studio is expertly executed with a crunchy guitar tone, audible bass lines and massive sounding drums. The artwork, design and lay-out by Mariusz Stelagowski is fantastic and fits perfectly with music presented here. "Black Sun Rising" is a more than commendable album in the symphonic black metal genre that few can match - even the established names in the genre.
