Hailing from the unlikely place Iran depressive black metal one-man band Silent Path debut on Latvia's Evil Distribution. "Mourner Portraits" is bleak funereal black metal much in the tradition of Xasthur, Nortt and Forgotten Tomb. Although presented by its label as a black metal release Silent Path are more doom than anything else. The 9 tracks of this record clock a grand total of 54 minutes. Count De Efrit, the sole being responsible for this auditory hell, has unleashed his inner demons and created one of the most harrowing funeral doom releases since Worship's legendary "Last CD Before Doomsday" and Thergothon's "Streams From Heaven". The atmosphere is damp, dense and claustrophobic while the fleeting melodies and soothing acoustics provide some minor solace in this feedback and gloom laden attack. Vocals vary from grunts, whispers and strangled rasps. The production is expectedly raw, minimalistic and underproduced, especially the guitars suffer from that. The drums however sound fantastic with a meaty kickdrum, audible cymbals and organic snares. The cover art is amazing in its nihilistic purity, although no artist is credited. The samples of thunderstorms and rain combined with spooky keyboard lines don't miss their intended effect. It all fits perfectly with this blackish funeral doom package. It's still a bit rough around the edges and the band hasn't fully found its voice yet, but Silent Path certainly sound promising within their genre.
