Symphonic death metal from Brisbane, Australia. The album takes off after a fairly pointless instrumental 'Prelude' before giving way to true album opener 'From Whence It Came'. Empyrean combine the pompous bombastic keyboards and piano of "Death Cult Armageddon" Dimmu Borgir and pre-"Hate Crew Death Roll" Children Of Bodom with choppy death metal and shrieked/growled vocals similar to "Slaughter Of Innocence" Hecate Enthroned. The occasional clean vocals remind of Alchemist's Adam Agius, although they are not nearly as good. Unlike Dimmu Borgir or Alchemist, Empyrean miss the catchy hooks and memorable arrangements that pull the listener headfirst into their material. 'Through Death and Beyond' is the record's most accomplished track, even featuring a swirling lead/solo. For the most part, the leads/solos are absent on this album. "Quietus" is an otherwise very serviceable death/dark metal record that misses a signature track to be truly called outstanding. Recorded at Studio Anders Debeerz with Adam Merker (Wish for Wings, Phalanx) and mastered at Hertz Studios in Poland with producers Slawek and Wojtek Wieslawski "Quietus" comes with a pristine production that can match any of the established bands on the scene. The gloomy artwork might not be as impressive as Be'lakor's latest offering but fits well enough with the package at hand here. A promo video was shot for 'Pleasure Of Another's Pain'. Empyrean aren't yet on the same label as country mates Be'lakor or Ironwood as far as their affinity for epic songwriting craft is concerned, but they are certainly getting there.
