Baltimore, Maryland death metallers Misery Index take their name from the economic indicator, created by economist Arthur Okun, which is found by adding the unemployment rate to the inflation rate or the 1997 Assück album of the same name, whichever you prefer. Two years after their Relapse Records debut "Discordia" Misery Index' explosive mix of blasting death metal, hardcore punk and grindcore is as relevant and bloodcurdling as ever. The album starts off with a short intro piece 'We Never Come In Peace' which seamlessly segues into 'Theocracy'. Adam Jarvis has improved in leaps and bounds over the last two years and he can easily compete with former drummers Matt Byers and Kevin Talley. The vocal interaction between Jason Netherton and Mark Kloeppel has expanded and both deliver excellent work. 'Partisans Of Grief' and 'Traitors' feature guest vocals by Guy Kozowyk (The Red Chord), 'Ruling Class Cancelled' also has Tomas Lindberg (At the Gates, Disfear) providing backing vocals. Where their earlier material still had Misery Index firmly entrenched in the sound of the band from whence they came, Dying Fetus, "Discordia" and this record sees the band confidently taking their own direction. Recorded at Godcity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts with producer Kurt Ballou (Converge, Animosity, Magrudergrind). Mixed and mastered at Wrightway Studios by Steve Wright and Drew Lamond. The artwork by in-house designer Orion Landau is brilliant and the booklet is filled with relevant quotes from the likes of Thomas Paine, Sylvia Plath, George Carlin, Friedrich Nietzsche and such. Misery Index have delivered more than a serviceable third album, as this record is nothing short of a call to arms against a failing political and economic system.
