5 years after their Displeased Records debut "Arrival Of the Carnivore" German black/thrashers Nocturnal return with "Violent Revenge" after releasing a number of splits and EPs in the intervening years. Like their debut the ten tracks of this record fly by at breakneck speed. Kreator, Destruction and Sodom are the main inspirations here while the rasping vocals make this sound similar to Belgium's now defunct Demonizer or the earlier records of Sweden's Bewitched. There isn't a whole lot of variation between the cuts of this record and that is also not what "Violent Revenge" is about. It tries to re-capture to feeling of a record, as say, "Pleasure to Kill" in the context of today's retro-thrash metal movement. Nocturnal wastes no time with intricate song structures, rapid tempo changes or vapid technicality; this is a visceral record that gets to the point and delivers what is expected. Compared to their Displeased Records debut "Violent Revenge" comes with a much more balanced production, while retaining enough grittiness and rough edges to appeal to the black metal crowds. The artwork of "Arrival Of the Carnivore" was better but there's something spooky about this record more simple drawing. Nocturnal have churned out another vicious black/thrash gem with "Violent Revenge" hopefully they'll be able to write more album like this in the coming years.
