Florida death metallers Obituary are on a creative apex since reforming in 2002. After the commendable comeback record "Frozen In Time" (2005) the band drafted guitarist Ralph Santolla (ex-Iced Earth, ex-Deicide) and since released "Xecutioner's Return" (2007) and the "Left to Die" EP. Now they are back with "Darkest Day" and Obituary haven't sounded as ravenous as this since "Slowly We Rot" or "Cause Of Death". This is without doubt Obituary's fastest material to date. Donald Tardy (drums) lays down his most versatile work, while Trevor Peres and Ralph Santolla combine the former's patented swamp riffing with the latter's extensive neo-classical leads/solos. Frank Watkins' bass is thunderous as ever laying down an excellent bottom end groove. Tribal drums on 'Blood to Give' by Greg Gall (Six Feet Under). 'Violent Dreams' is a fast grinder much like 'Words Of Evil' from "Slowly We Rot". In all, the riffing and dynamics are that of mid-era Obituary, particular "The End Complete" and "World Demise". Vocally, John Tardy is his usual self and it's surprising to see his vocals hold up so well after almost two decades of abuse. Recorded at Redneck Studio in Gibsonton, Florida. Mixed by Mark Prator at Redroom Recorders and mastered by Tim Turan at Turan Audio. The album's artwork was done by Andreas Marschall who created the art for "The End Complete", "Frozen in Time" and "Xecutioner's Return". Once again the Xecutioner (who has an uncanny resemblance to the Creature From the Black Lagoon) and the Dragon Creature feature prominently. "Darkest Day" is another fine addition to the Obituary discography, although they have hardly changed since starting in 1988.
