Ambient black metal from Berne, Switzerland. The hypnotising riffing, fleeting melodies and soaring synthesizers make "Skullreader" quite an esoteric affair. Overall, this is quite doom oriented and the drum computer adds to the otherworldy feeling this record aims for. A comparison could be made to Limbonic Art as far as the drum computer goes, but this is where the similarities end. The vocals are mostly deformed grunts and rasps with the occasional frail female passages. The riffing is similar to Tiamat's dark metal opus "The Astral Sleep". The psydelic doom passages and strange vocal stylings regularly remind of UK stalwarts Esoteric. Roberto Mammarella (Monumentum) has provided Skullreader with various synthetic textures and samplings. The combination is ambient black metal with psychedelic doom is a daring combination that will probably appeal to the most extreme of the extreme. "Skullreader" is a ghastly journey through the darkest reaches of the human spirit. The atmosphere is dark, the dynamics sparse and the melodies are haunting. Sun Of the Blind is not for everybody, but those ordained to appreciate it will find a hidden gem with this record. Frightingly intense!
