On their seventh album "The Final Conflict: The Last Days Of God" the band, fronted by former Church Of Satan reverend Vincent Crowley, do not drastically alter their approach or direction and "The Final Conflict" sounds very consistent because of it. Together with former Incantation drummer Kyle Severn and session guitarists Ash Thomas (Estuary) and Max Otworth (Darkness Undying) Acheron now sound more hostile and convincing than ever. "The Final Conflict" is reminiscent of Death's "Spiritual Healing" and Incantation's patented monolithic death-doom metal although Acheron doesn't quite hold the same level of dynamics as the former or the oppressing darkness of the latter, it is a feat to hear a band that is as long around as they are still sound so fresh and exciting. The CD was recorded at Mars Recording Compound with Bill Korecky and was mastered at West West Side Music in New Windsor, New York by Alan Douches giving the whole a modern smooth production job while retaining the old school warmth and organicness in sound. The artwork, design and lay-out are superb, especially the cover artwork, which depicts a Cerberus-like creature representing the three major religions. Twenty years after forming Acheron still is at the frontlines of the underground. Acheron might not be as popular as some of earlier bands in the US metal scene, but they remain as vital and relevant to it as ever.
