Triumph Of Evilution (EP)

Russian extremists Katalepsy return after their debut "Musick Brings Injuries" and their latest EP sounds like "The Seeds Of Abysmal Torment" & "Murder Without End" era Fleshgrind with a dash of Aborted circa "Engineering the Dead". The EP is reasonably technical in execution and composition, but Katalepsy don't quite match the level of Aborted in writing catchy chunky death metal. The slam-death stylings limit Katalepsy in its songwriting, as they could probably deliver some reasonably dark and demonic sounding US death metal, but that promise is often relegated to the backburner thanks to the slam-death genre's all too narrow confines. Samples from "Saw" are scattered through out this EP and don't add anything to the tracks in particular. The production is deliciously bass heavy putting the guitars up and front while giving the bass enough space to deliver the utmost effect. Unfortunately too often Katalepsy still abides to the unwritten rules of the slam-death genre, but this EP certainly holds some promise for development as the band is slowly shedding these trappings and writing some mean and hateful sounding death metal. "Triumph Of Evilution" is hardly a mandatory release in the genre and, as such, it comes as no surprise that this was released as triple split album with two other relatively unknown slam-death acts Fleshrot (UK) and Blunt Force Trauma (Japan). If you liked what this band did on its previous releases, you'll have no problem liking their current output. Those unfamiliar with this branch of death metal are highly advised to check out the earlier releases in the genre to get their fix.
