On a label that is otherwise known for its nose for quality underground black metal it's strange to find a band like this. Sektarism offers ritualistic sounding funeral doom in the tradition of bands like Burning Witch (although not nearly as Black Sabbath inspired), Nortt and Thorr's Hammer. Vocally, this is slightly reminiscent of "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" era Mayhem, while musically it remains solidly in the funeral doom metal category reminiscent of Worship's "Last CD Before Doomsday". Hanging somewhere between black metal and funeral doom Sektarism don't take either route fully, resulting in the plodding 17 minute epic title track. The production is miminal and raw, revelling in the feedback of the guitars and the sloppy drumming. The growls are appropriate but the emotive shouts are better left behind in future recordings. There's no sense of dynamics to this sole track, which is difficult in funeral doom, but bands as Esoteric, Skepticism and Thergothon have made headway in infusing tempo changes in this genre. The track plods aimlessly for the entire duration and the basic instrumentation doesn't help matters either. Coming with minimalistic black-white artwork Sektarism is for die-hard genre fans only.
