Funebrarum has been around since 1999 and consists of a number of New Jersey/New York scene veterans that cut their teeth in bands like Evoken, Assück and Abazagorath. "The Sleep Of Morbid Dreams" is the band's second album after their 2001 debut EP "Beneath the Columns Of Abandoned Gods" on Necroharmonic Productions. "The Sleep Of Morbid Dreams" is stylistically identical to the debut. Dark and hateful sounding death metal like Autopsy, Grave, Incantation, (early) Morbid Angel and Pungent Stench, etc. Nick Orlando (Evoken) here shows a totally different side to his musical personality with his choppy guitar riffs. There's a Swedish flair to the guitar work and melodies, particularly of the Stockholm kind. Also, the material of this record holds the same dark atmosphere as Unleashed's "Shadows In the Deep" or Entombed's "Clandestine". Vocally, this also sounds more traditional in that they are screamed and belched, rather than vomited or deep and guttural as is (sadly) standard in the underground these days. Recorded at Cyclone Sound Studios in Brooklyn, New York with producer Don Fury (Agnostic Front, Helmet) the record is graced with a raw but modern sounding production that fits the assault rather nicely. The artwork and lay-out are minimal and dark, somewhat reminiscent of Sadistic Intent's "Black Earth". "The Sleep Of Morbid Dreams" is a solid old school death metal record by seasoned veterans.
