On their fourth record Atlanta, Georgia heavy rockers Mastodon fully embrace their progressive – and classic rock side with even a hint country. As a result, Mastodon have probably released their most accomplished record to date. “Blood Mountain” already saw the band toning down their stoner/hardcore influences and the prevalent hoarse screams and belches had been mostly replaced by clean vocals. On “Crack the Skye” the hoarse vocals are completely gone, which is in itself not necessarily a bad thing. The majority of the clean vocals are split between vocalist/bassist Troy Sanders and guitarist Brent Hinds. ‘Crack the Skye’ features guest vocals by Scott Kelly (Neurosis). Despite only having 7 tracks the album clocks a hefty 50 minutes. ‘The Czar’ is a three part epic clocking a nearly 11 minutes and ‘The Last Baron’ is Mastodon’s longest track at nearly 13 minutes. Like “Blood Mountain” preceding it this record is a conceptual story penned by drummer Brann Dailor, dealing with themes of astral travel, wormholes, out-of-the-body experiences, the theories of Stephen Hawkin, plus Rasputin and Czarist Russia. Recorded at Southern Tracks Recording in Atlanta, Georgia. “Crack the Skye” was produced and mixed by Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots) who also did AC/DC’s “Black Ice”. Artwork was once again conjured up by resident Mastodon artist Paul Romano. “Crack the Skye” is Mastodon’s most ambitious record to date and while they have shed some of their heavier elements, they have become so much better performers and songwriters because of it.
