Rogga Johansson is Sweden’s one-man death metal industry, resulting in studio projects such as Bone Gnawer, Demiurg, Foreboding, Putrevore and Revolting. Besides his involvement in Ribspreader and Those Who Bring the Torture he also has his own band with Paganizer. “Scandinavian Warmachine” is the band’s 7th record of pure and uncompromising Swedish death metal. This is classic Swedish death metal that is catchy, groovy and melodic in the traditional sense. Most of the material is delivered at a heavy mid-pace with excellent blast sections and grim passages of doom. The guitars are crunchy, the bass rumbles and the drumming is full with exciting rolls and fills. Johansson’s work behind the mic is very much in vein of Per Gyllenback’s work with the now defunct Deranged. Drawing inspiration from bands as Grave, Kaamos, Nominon, Vomitory and (early) Entombed “Scandinavian Warmachine” delivers what its title implies: complete and utter annihilation in the Stockholm tradition. The warmachine depicted on the cover is reminiscent of Dismember’s “Massive Killing Capacity”. Seven albums deep into their career Paganizer still do no concessions. Their tunnel vision of what death metal is about should be applauded. Listening to a record like this makes it feel like 1991 never passed.
