Mesmerized in Stone ()

Spanish neo-classical black/doom metal with symphonic elements, monk-like wailing vocals courtesy of former Golgotha singer Amon López and occasional female vocals. Recorded at the band's home studio, Kartenburg Studios, "Mesmerized In Stone" has a relatively good sound, although the drum computer sounds notably shoddy. The guitar tone is thick enough but misses a bit of clarity to be truly superb while the bass is magnificently audible. The synthesizers and church organs feature prominently and are given enough room in the mix. In its doom sections Firesword reminds of earliest My Dying Bride (circa "As the Flower Withers") and even Theatre Of Tragedy ("Velvet Darkness They Fear") in its vocal interplay and general oppressive feel. Firesword's faster material feels contrived and forced and they particularly shine in the slow and plodding material of this promo. Highlight of this promo is definitely the majestic and sombre sounding 'Marble Skin'. The artwork, design and lay-out remind more of underground black metal than anything resembling doom metal. Firesword aren't remotely doing anything remarkable here, but the doom aspect is definitely worth exploring further.
