Black War (ep)

Symphonic black metal from Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada) that sounds like "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" and "Death Cult Armageddon" era Dimmu Borgir with a dash of "Slaughter Of Innocence" era Hecate Enthroned for good measure. The keyboards and orchestrations feature prominently but never dominate the solid foundation of guitars. The drumwork is basic and functional, but not exceptional in any way or form. Graveland could be a possible comparison, as far as the drumming goes. Vocals alternate between a venomous black metal rasp courtesy of frontwoman Artep and a deep grunt by guitarist Vultyrous. In comparison to the likes of Dimmu Borgir this band misses the recognizable hooks and epic grandeur in its music and plays too much by the numbers to be truly called adventurous. The tracks of this EP definitely have some potential for growth and greatness but Artep isn't quite on the same level as its inspirations yet. The inclusion of a more skilled drummer could improve their music drastically. The production is relatively okay, although the drum kit sounds horrible, especially the snare drums suffer from the limited production values whenever they go into a blast section. The artwork, design and lay-out are commendable for a band in this particular genre. Overall, not too shabby but hardly necessary or vital.
