Solid Gothenburg death metal in the vein of (early) In Flames, Dissection, Eucharist, Sacramentum, etc. Escutcheon has been around since 1996 and released a couple of demos, a full length and even a DVD, but dropped off the scene later. Now the band is back and featuring members from Devious. Firmly rooted in the tradition of the mid-nineties Escutcheon refrains from playing at constant top speed and the mid-to-fast approach is beneficiary for the songs, giving them an epic feel. The arrangements, use of melody and shifts in tempo give each of the songs a recognizable hooks while never compromising in sheer visceral brutality. The production is massive and the playing impeccable making Escutcheon one of the better bands in this particular genre. A few years ago the Gothenburg melodic death scene was oversaturated by mediocre bands, but with acts like Escutcheon bringing the subgenre back to its basics, this might just trigger a revival of the classic Swedish death metal sound. The artwork and packaging are amazing and put fellow bands to shame. Deity Down Records have added another gem to their impressive roster. Recommended for fans of the subgenre who like their melodic death metal hostile and aggressive and bereft of any its modern day trappings.
