Mainman Steffen Kummerer (vocals, guitar) has assembled quite a star-studded cast for his Relapse Records debut "Cosmogenesis". Featuring two former Necrophagist members with guitarist Christian Muenzner and drummer Hannes Grossmann, plus former Pestilence bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling there's good reason why "Cosmogenesis" is a high anticipated affair. Things start off on the wrong foot, however, with 'Anticosmic Overload' which sounds a bit too close to Necrophagist for comfort. Once past the opener the album quickly reaches its apex and maintains the same high quality through out. The sheer level of technicality becomes clear in cuts such as 'Universe Momentum' while Thesseling's fretless bass features prominently, it get its chance to shine in the grandiose instrumental 'Orbital Elements'. The vocal experimentation reminds of Cynic ('Infinite Rotation', 'Choir Of Spirits'). Recorded, mixed, and mastered by V. Santura at Woodshed Studios in Landshut, Germany "Cosmogenesis" comes with a pristine production. Artwork, design and lay-out by Relapse in-house designer Orion Landau is truly exceptional. Guest appearances by luminaries Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower, Blotted Science) and Tymon Kruidenier (Cynic) form the icing on the cake. Combining the best of Atheist, Cynic, Death and Necrophagist "Cosmogenesis" is worth every accolade that is bestowed upon it. Truly a remarkable technical death metal record.
