Where their "Vagrant Matter Heritage" EP concentrated more on the band's avant-garde and progressive leanings "From Beyond" is more straightforward and heavy, especially the band's death – and doom metal aspects seem to flourish here. With increased levels of heaviness "From Beyond" is a wholly different beast than last year's EP. Combining death metal's heaviness with the hostility of black metal and the technical finesse of progressive metal Satanochio is a band that can appeal to different markets at once. 'Outcast the Darkest' could have been written by a demented and demonic incarnation of Control Denied. 'Point Seven Five Ounces' on the other hand displays the profound influence of French death metallers Gojira on this masked Romanian outfit. 'Lethe' is more a death/doom metal exercise sounding like Paradise Lost, circa "Icon" in its opening section. 'From Beyond' is the band death/doom metal tour-de-force with excellent lead/solo work. The bass-heavy production has considerably bettered compared to the band's earlier records, although the drums sound a bit hollow and powerless. The guitar tone is clear enough but doesn't really hold a bit of punch or bite. The strange and unsettling ambient and industrial soundscapes that appear here and there in the record provide the album with an aura of otherworldliness. Artwork, design and lay-out by Costin Chioreanu is perhaps the best thing about this record. In due course Satanochio will be recognized as Romania's most promising extreme metal export product.
