Chesapeake, Virginia black/thrash metal combo The Day Of the Beast debut on Canonical Hours Records after releasing one sole demo at the beginning of 2008. Drawing influences from The Crown, Deströyer 666, Kreator, (early) Morbid Angel and to a lesser degree Exodus “The Day Of the Beast” is a high octane exercise in well written and expertly executed black/thrash metal with death metal undertones. The riffing is reminiscent of both classic Bay Area thrash metal and late ‘90s Swedish death metal. Vocalist Steve Harris (no relation to Iron Maiden’s charismatic bassist) sounds like a vicious and pissed off Dave Mustaine (Megadeth). Perhaps the most known member of this combo is bassist Justin Shaw, who cut his teeth in the revered Arsis. His work features up-and-front on this record and he is the band’s definite selling point. Overall, the instrumental prowess of this unit is very impressive, although they are hardly reinventing the wheel. Recorded at Karma Productions in Midlothian, Virginia with producer Cory Smoot and Dave Gibson “The Day Of the Beast” comes with a pristine production that has a crisp and crunchy guitar tone, booming bass lines and a massive sound for the drum kit. The demonic artwork, design and lay-out by the ever reliable Joe Petagno (Angelcorpse, Diabolic, Krisiun) graces this all important first album from The Day Of the Beast with an air of professionalism. Not the most original band on the scene today, but certainly one that has a bright future in front of itself.
