Playing fast-paced death/thrash in the vein of “Show No Mercy” era Slayer and “Kill ‘em All” era Metallica with shrieking vocals that sound between Schmier (Destruction) and Tomas Lindberg (At the Gates, Disfear) Saarbrücken, Germany based Godslave couldn’t have released their new promo at a better time. The riffing and drumming is where the band derives its Slayer influence from. Godslave keeps the pedal firmly to the metal but the material on “Out Of the Ashes” is hardly memorable in that it both misses the evil panache of the former and the songwriting skill of the latter. The material on this promo is written well enough but misses the spark that makes them stand out from the competition. There’s an excellent old school vibe and feeling present on this album, but that isn’t enough to sell it these days. ‘Wings Of Wrath’ is probably the strongest song on this EP as it sounds like Metallica somewhere between “Kill Em All” and “Master Of Puppets”. Overall, “Out Of the Ashes” would benefit from an added dose of aggression and speed. This is very similar to what Demonizer was doing on their 2003 debut “Thrashing Force... Attack”, although it isn’t as nearly as volatile. The artwork, design and lay-out are fantastic and very similar to the work of Graal. With the insane amount of retro thrash metal bands crowding the scene today, it will be hard for any band to get noticed. “Out Of the Ashes” is a good little throwback album, but its something that has been done plenty times before and most of the time even better.
