On their 2007 EP “Stereolith” Belgian technical death metallers Orb Of Torture already proved that they were a promising act. One year later and armed with a new promo called “Cryogenic Cleansing” the band is now more accomplished than ever. Influenced by Sylvain Houde era Kataklysm (“Sorcery”), Suffocation (“Breeding the Spawn”) and Monstrosity this record is additionally coming with and old school Swedish sense of melody. The overall atmosphere is suffocating and dark, reminding of (early) Immolation. “Cryogenic Cleansing” is the best the Belgian underground has to offer at this point. The riffing here is dense but varied, taking cues from both death – and black metal and simultaneously integrating jaw-dropping technical sections and old school chugging. The vocal work has a lot in common with classic Altar, circa “Youth Against Christ” and “Ego Art”. Drummer Jense Philips is the true star of this record, laying down an impressive array of blasts, fills and rolls. The inclusion of minimal tribal drums and robotic vocoder vocals give this EP a modern and futuristic feel. “Cryogenic Cleansing” was recorded, mixed and mastered at CCR Studios (Aborted, Leng Tch’e) with producer/engineer Kris Belaen. The artwork, design and lay-out are once again somewhat that is completely out of the box for the genre, making Orb Of Torture very original in the process. Definitely another very solid release from Belgium’s best kept genre secret.
