This Turku, Finland-based act has its roots in brutal US death metal act Maggottholamia but its concept and style are radically different. Clearly inspired by the classic Florida progressive death metal titans, such as later era Death (“Individual Thought Patterns” and “Symbolic” come to mind), Atheist and Cynic “As Creativity Turns Into Lunacy” is a strong and convincing genre record. Like their legendary predecessors the songs of this album are mostly played at midpace with carefully constructed songstructures and highly impressive technical skill. The guitar riffs are of the Chuck Schuldiner variety that use neo-classical structures, exotic scales, Eastern melodies and controlled dissonance as a guideline. Virulent Blessing know how to write an engaging song, although they haven’t written anything that stands out at this point. Unlike Sweden’s highly underrated genre masters Theory In Practice this Finnish act doesn’t go overboard with its rampant technicality and the songs always remain recognizable despite their layered and complicated nature. The production is excellent with a thick but clear guitar tone, audible bass lines and very well produced drums. The artwork, design and lay-out aren’t the typical horror scenario but fit excellent with Virulent Blessing’s more forward thinking stance. In all, “As Creativity Turns Into Lunacy” is a good record in the genre, although it won’t hardly turn any heads.
