Taking their moniker from one of At the Gates less known tracks of their venerable "Slaughter Of the Soul" sessions, Belgian combo The Dying debut convincingly with "Triumph Of Tragedy". Blending archetypical Swedish melodic death metal with bone-breaking thrash/groove metal (Sepultura, Pantera, Machine Head) and biting hardcore vocals (including those godawful gang shouts) this debut is little different than most melodic death metal fare. Both more straightforward and less typically melodic The Dying provide "Triumph Of Tragedy" with a lethal dose of old school fashioned brutality and tenacity. The riffing and harmonies are okay, but nothing in these departments stands out as something that hasn't been done before. The biggest problem with "Triumph Of Tragedy" is that - while it is delivered with the utmost competence, musically as well as visually - nothing truly stands out from the many competitors in this genre. The songs swirl themselves through the expected twists and turns of the genre, but nothing warrants more than a conforming nod. The production is fantastic with a clear-cut dry sounding guitar tone, audible bass lines and a great sound for the drum kit, especially the bass drums. Holding middleground between the Sunlight Studio sound of old and the modern production of Tue Madsen "Triumph Of Tragedy" offers the best of both worlds in one lethal blow. The artwork, design and lay-out are done properly but do little do stand out. Apparently, The Dying come almost a decade late to the Gothenburg party but this will undoubtly go over well with the Darkest Hour/The Black Dahlia Murder and neo-thrash metal crowds.
