Scotland is rather anonymous on the international extreme metal scene. My Minds Weapon debut with "The Carrion Sky" on German label Drakkar Entertainment. This debut is filled with polyrhythmic soaring technical metal like Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad and Dutch luminaries Textures. Compared to Textures this act combines clean vocals with semi-grunts and are overall heavier and more metalcore in delivery. The biggest downfall on this record is the complete lack of individualism as everything about My Minds Weapon reeks of Textures worship: the contrasting dual vocal styles, the soaring melodies, sparse acoustics and the mechanical staccato riffing. Everything is delivered expertly with impeccable performances from all musicians, yet there's little soul or fire to be heard within this debut. The detached and soulless delivery adds to the machinal sound of this Scottish unit. The production is flawless with crisp guitar tone that holds enough crunch, a massive sounding drum kit and carefully tracked vocals. The artwork, design and lay-out are impressive and fit exceptionally well with a record of this kind. My Minds Weapon have succeeded in perfectly capturing everything that makes their Dutch inspirations so great and genre-defying. While this band has the technical chops to pull off something impressive and truly their own "The Carrion Sky" doesn't quite show it. Maybe with their next record this Aberdeen act will show its own face and we'll known truly discover their worth? In the meantime, this is a great Textures worship album.
