Rochester, New York death metal combo Abdicate debut on Sevared Records and present a gloomy dark take on the old school New York sound. Abdicate sound like a mix between "Onward to Golgotha"/"Mortal Throne Of Nazarene" era Incantation and "Here In After" era Immolation (without the overt technicality). Vocally, this is more in the line with powerviolence bands such as Benümb. The riffing is mostly in the vein of Incantation, although influences from bands such as Condemned and Devourment are felt as well. The riffing is solid and although there are no leads/solos on this record a dark atmosphere is felt from the beginning. Like their formative and legendary inspirations the drumming on this record is mostly midpaced to slow with a great use of rolling bass drums, very much in style of Incantation luminaries Jim Roe or Kyle Severn. The bass guitar features prominently in the mix and gives the band a great beefy sound. The production is solid with a meaty guitar tone that holds enough punch, range and clarity. The artwork is slightly reminiscent of Brodequin's earlier records, yet fits this act perfectly. This album was originally released independently by the band, but is now picked up for a limited release (200 copies) by underground specialist label Sevared Records. After California act Banishment debuted excellently on Lacerated Enemy Records this Rochester, New York unit is now bringing old school sensitivities back to one of the genre's most prominent capitals.
