Australian one-man black metal project Striborg deliver their second release for 2008 with the aptly titled full length “The Foreboding Silence”. As in the past this album is filled with paper thin forest black metal heavy on one-dimensional repetitive riffing to create a hallucinotic and harrowing effect. Striborg’s patented dirge tempos, sorrowfilled riffs, wailing demonic rasps and oppressive atmospheres have remained intact and the band doesn not deviate from its well known, tried-and-true formula. The drumming is still complementary and sloppy when at lower tempos. As noted the production is absolutely minimal, grating and horrible to say the least. The guitar tone is nothing but distant fuzz, the bass is surprisingly audible yet Sin-Nanna’s trollish vocals sound as weird as ever. The non-existent production adds to the overall underground feel of this product. As with any Striborg release this is very much a “love it or hate it” affair and this record is no different. The artwork, design and lay-out are sombre and in fact exactly what is expected of a record of this kind. Fans of Xasthur, Leviathan, Mütiilation and Ildjarn will find much to like here. Those looking for a desolate, hallucinatory and harrowing black metal record will find their fill with “The Foreboding Silence” and in the majority of Striborg's extensive catalogue. This is definitely not for the squeamish or the faint of heart.
