    The Serpent Coven ()

Wydane przez Northern Silence Productions/Eyes Like Snow RecordsRok wydania Kraj FinlandNapisał Wouter5Komentarze (0)The Wandering Midget - The Serpent CovenFinland’s The Wandering Midget play psychedelic doom that sounds like a mix between Electric Wizard, Reverend Bizarre and the epic majesty of Candlemass. In fact, “The Serpent Coven” is very similar in style and vocals to Reverend Bizarre. Where Reverend Bizarre is able to keep their psychedelic doom interesting thanks to their excellent dynamics this unit doens’t quite master that ability like their legendary inspirations. The lack of remarkable dynamics makes most of the material on this record sound unmoving and generic at best. Combined with the horrible vocals The Wandering Midget has nothing to their advantage. Production-wise this release is a bit flat as the guitars aren’t high enough in the overall mix and don’t nearly hold enough punch. Bass and drums are clearly audible but sit a bit lifeless and static in the whole. While there is room for progress and growth The Wandering Midget hold potential to create something that is truly their own. The thorough lack of identity and original ideas is this band’s biggest downfall. “The Serpent Coven” is nothing earth-shattering really, but well worth a listen if you’re a die-hard fan of tripped out, psychedelic doom metal. Certainly, The Wandering Midget aren’t the most innovative, adventurous or even remotely original in their chosen field but there are far worse records out there than “The Serpent Coven”.
