On their seventh studio album Brazilian storm commando Krisiun do no concessions to their well-known and respected brand of technically proficient brutal death metal. Fast, ruthless and uncompromising as ever the three Brazilian brothers deliver another 12 slabs of demonically chiselled death metal, plus a even more hostile sounding rendition of Sepultura’s classic groove anthem ‘Refuse/Resist’. Compared to "AssassiNation" (2006) this record is extremely dynamical with all tracks slithering through various tempo-changes, spiralling riffs and a warped sense of diabolicism. As always the demonic riffs and wailing leads/solos are a true wonder to behold. Most of the guitar work here is highly technical, slightly melodic and almost border on the progressive at various instances. Unlike many of its underground peers Krisiun never dropped doing serpentine leads/solos and with each consecutive album they prove they have only honed their craft over the years. Max Kolesne (drums) also gets a chance to shine on this record, perhaps laying down his most varied, punishing and intense work behind the kit to date. Like "Conquerors Of Armageddon" (2000) and "AssassiNation" (2006) before it, this album was painstakingly recorded at Stage One Studios in Borgentreich, Germany with famed genre producer Andy Classen providing it with a crystal clear, bone-dusting heavy and modern production that gives each instrument its required space while never compromising in sheer heaviness or brutality. The only minor letdown is the strangely subdued artwork, which fails to capture Krisiun’s sheer force or viciousness this time around, wnich never seemed to be a problem in the past. All in all, "Southern Storm" is the band’s best album to date and a point of reference for Brazilian death metal, in general.
