Following up his 2008 debut "Pleasures Of the Scalpel" revered graphic designer Mark Riddick returns with this stopgap EP. Like on that debut Fetid Zombie's central influences are (early) Carcass, (early) Napalm Death and General Surgery. Much like these early pioneers of the genre, Riddick delivers a horrifying barrage of gore-drenched, anti-religious old school bass-heavy grindcore with semi-technical guitar work and an interesting use of harmonies and creepy leads/solos. Riddick still uses a drum computer and his heavily pitch-shifted vocals add to the macabre atmosphere that this unit aims for. Overall, "Abort the Messiah" plays mostly at midpace with occasional faster sections. The production still isn't the most amazing with relatively thin sounding guitars and the drum computer sounds too sterile, especially the snare drums. As was the case with the "Pleasures Of the Scalpel" debut Riddick has provided artwork for this stopgap EP himself and this forms an excellent continuation of the concepts and themes started on that record. This will appeal to fans of Blood Freak, General Surgery, Haemorrhage and Impetigo. Excellent old school grind.
