Funeral Mourning

Australian one-man funeral doom act that closely resembles Finnish acts such as Skepticism and Thergothon with an added black metal vibe. The thin guitar tone, slowly pulsating drums and wailing vocals link this band with underground black metal acts such as Xasthur, Striborg or Leviathan. On the other hand do the gradually unfolding melodies, acoustic sections, the light use of piano and keyboards push Funeral Mourning firmly in the funeral doom category. "Drown In Solitude" is a good if not unremarkable record for the genre, although it is hardly recommendable for anyone who already owns the quintessential record of this particular genre. The production is on the thin side with a buzzing guitar tone that holds little punch. The drums site comfortably in the background almost reducing themselves to merely a tool to keep rhythm and time. The vocals are wailing and dramatic, pretty much down the line of what you would expect to hear on a Striborg record. The cover art is based on a metal carving in the 1500s, these carvings were used to scare people about going to Hell and for propaganda purposes. This is a small panel of the same painting that Machine Head used for their critically acclaimed "The Blackening". Overall, "Drown In Solitude" is a genre record that won't turn any heads nor win any fans over for this difficult to digest genre, yet with some additional finetuning and improved production values Funeral Mourning might deliver an album that would establish their name in this genre.
