Starting off with a sample from the 1999 thriller "8mm" San Diego, California death metallers Gortuary immediately show what they have in store on their debut "Manic Thoughts Of Perverse Mutilation". Much like (early) Cannibal Corpse, Devourment and (early) Deeds Of Flesh this band is a typical representation of the current US death metal movement: guttural vocals, thick semi-technical riffing, thundering bass lines, regular leads/solos and mammoth drum salvos with a fitting amount of breakdowns and slam parts. Gortuary infuse their assault with much old school aesthetics as the material is considerably catchy, holds tons of groove and the creepy leads/solos add greatly to the macabre atmosphere that permeates from this album. Much like their peers in Condemned, Disgorge, Inherit Disease and Pathology, Gortuary do this genre with much gusto and deliver what is expected of them. The material on this record is nothing short of intense and insanely brutal, but it is by no means an instant classic in waiting. "Manic Thoughts Of Perverse Mutilation" is a solid but predictable record that adheres to all written and unwritten rules of the genre. The delivery is fierce and the production is clean enough while remaining heavy without sacrificing any clarity, depth or definition. The rabid assault combined with top notch production and absolutely stunning artwork make "Manic Thoughts Of Perverse Mutilation" a great genre record that is solid yet never truly surprises.
